Loren Goldner died today, the news is devastating. Both Robert Brenner and I have been friends with Loren for decades. There was a period in the 90s when Loren would call around 11pm LA time, so 2am in New York and we’d talk for hours. I was often too tired to continue, but not Loren Goldner! I visited Loren while he was the librarian at Harvard University — he arranged a talk for me — and afterwards we went to his favorite Portuguese restaurant. When I saw his apartment I feared for his life: he had stacks of books perhaps six feet high all around his bed. Good thing Cambridge (MA) didn’t have earthquakes! Loren said he liked having the books within reach. Loren was a polyglot, never afraid to master a new language, though he said Arabic was challenging. He read more than anyone it seemed, and was indefatigable in discussion. He also loved obscure political films. Loren was sui generis, good natured and sweet, had excellent politics and a rare depth of understanding. This is a tragic loss. RIP my friend.

I’m crushed to hear of Loren Goldner’s passing. It had been a few years since we last connected, but Loren organized the first talk I ever gave on South African politics — in the geography dept at CUNY with his Insurgent Notes comrades. I first met him when he crashed on my couch in Oakland about 15 years ago — probably in 2010. I’ll never forget sitting in the backyard debating Luxemburg’s Accumulation of Capital until 4 in the morning.
When I traveled to Paris a couple of years later, I linked up with Loren in Brooklyn beforehand. He drew me a map of all of the best bookstores in Paris (first picture below) and organized meetings with all sorts of comrades — the most memorable being Henri Simon. He was so excited to hear my report upon my return.
I never met another Marxist as hungry for political discussion as Loren. When I was in Brooklyn again in 2015, I stopped off at his place around 10 am (series of 3 photos below), and he seemed really annoyed when I told him I had to go around 5. “We’d only just begun our discussion!” he complained.
I used to love his tours of his library. He had this backroom he called his office that was really just stacks of books all the way to the ceiling. And he was always so proud of the scheme he devised for organizing his shelves in his living room.
Rest in peace, Loren. We may’ve had all sorts of political disagreements, but no one loved a raging debate like you

Loren was a great interdisciplinarian. We would swoop across vast fields of knowledge. He was always creative about Marxism. He was neither a revisionist nor a Biblical commentator. He would always tell me about the most obscure books that I would always wind up reading. His house in Cambridge was amazing. One day he had some place to go and asked me to come along. I said no, I wanted to study his books. He came back about 5 hours later I I stlll had only gotten through about a fourth of them. Whenever I think of the very best in socialist self-education I think of him.

27 февраля 2006 г. я защитил на филос. ф-те МГУ свою докторскую . . . Сказать, что это была очень трудная защита, — значит, ничего не сказать. Одним из моих официальных оппонентов был Александр Викторович Назарчук, профессор философии ( http://www.nazarchuk.com/ ) и вместе с этим финансовый директор ЗАО «Северстальтранс» ( http://www.avias.com/news/2004/03/25/74528.html ). Ему очень не понравилась моя антикапиталистическая диссертация. Другой мой официальный оппонент — Леньшин Владимир
Петрович, доктор философских наук, доцент кафедры философии Академии ФСБ и офицер последней — вообще написал на меня отрицательный отзыв. В обсуждении активно участвовал ряд корифеев российской философии: чтобы представить себе их уровень, достаточно назвать одного из них — Ричард Иванович Косолапов. Одни кисло одобряли мой диссер, одинаково направленный и против общественного строя в СССР, и против капитализма, другие яростно нападали на меня. Тем не менее, я защитился, и моя защита была утверждена ВАКом.

Огромную роль в моей победе сыграло то, что свои отзывы прислали два марксистских профессора — Хиллел Тиктин и Сьюзан Вайсман. Отзыв Тиктина был представлен на защите и пошел в ВАК (Вайсман, к сожалению, не оформила его так, как этого требуют правила российской академической бюрократии), но поводом и материалом для дополнительных размышлений членам совета — еще до защиты — послужили они оба. Победа на той защите — это не только моя победа, это наша общая победа с товарищами Тиктином и Вайсман. Я уже выразил им свою благодарность на JRL — http://www.cdi.org/russia/johnson/2008-204.cfm — но рад сделать это вновь.

In my view V. Bugera has written a highly original dissertation which, in my view, thoroughly deserves to be awarded a doctorate.

The idea of looking at the concept of property through the prism of management and making the necessary distinctions among the different forms of management, which in turn then reflect back on property is itself an important discovery. One does not have to agree with everything written by Dr Bugera to appreciate the significance of his dissertation.

It was, of course, Karl Marx who first theorised the nature of change in social relations, building on Hegel and the Scottish and English political economists. Unfortunately his insights have often been demeaned and diminished by dogmatists. Bugera has produced a flexible and insightful analysis which stands in contrast with much that is supposedly in the above tradition.

The dissertation is clear and well structured. The themes with which he deals are clearly set out and developed. His argument on political consciousness in chapter 4 draws together historical, sociological and political economic threads together in a unique and stimulating form.

In my view the overall work has the qualities necessary to make it a work of high scholarship deserving of the award of a doctorate.

Doctoral Dissertation Report, Vladislav Bugera

I am writing in support of Vladislav Bugera’s Doctoral Dissertation, «Relations of Property & Management as Necessary Forms of Human Practice.» This is a highly original and well-written work which deserves the award of a doctorate. Vladislav Bugera is a young scholar with an already impressive international reputation, and this dissertation demonstrates what an asset he is to his university and community.

Vladislav Bugera has, in this work, made an important contribution to understanding the concept of property by developing an understanding of management. In developing this theory, Dr. Bugera has had to thoroughly examine the nature of social relations, social classes and economic exploitation. His work in this area is innovative and takes into
consideration new approaches. Through an analysis of the various forms of management, Dr. Bugera is able to offer a new way of understanding the nature of property itself. This is an original and important breakthrough that future scholars will have to consider. Another aspect which Bugera has developed is the crucial role that advanced technology and computing (computerization) play in a socialist society.

Bugera’s method of approaching his material has necessitated a deep and wide reading of the literature in several fields, including history, philosophy, political economy and political culture. His scholarship is impressive and his writing and organization are clear, with well developed points and important insights. Dr. Bugera has an admirable sweep and breadth and has incorporated primary research into accessible and readable prose. This is quite an accomplishment given the complex nature of the subject of his research. The result is a well written and engaging work that successfully combines empirical research and theoretical analysis.

The ideas Vladislav Bugera develops in relation to the philosophy of the nation and culture, as well as political consciousness (Chapter 4) are not only original, but stimulating and challenging. As with all of his work, Bugera makes his argument by weaving together scholarship across a range of fields, including sociology, philosophy, political economy and even cultural theory and history. In particular, his discussion of the causes of working class passivity is extremely perceptive as well as provocative. One needn’t agree with Bugera’s conclusions to appreciate the depth of his work in this area.

Bugera has produced a dissertation that will encourage open discussion of areas of analysis that have often been characterized by dreary dogmatism. One doesn’t have to agree with Bugera, but his method of research and writing are solid. For example, Bugera’s conception of the “neo-Asiatic” mode of production is intriguing but several aspects of his argument are open to criticism. There has been a good deal written on the nature of the political economy of the USSR and while Bugera’s approach is fascinating, I think he could benefit from a scholarly exchange with Professor Hillel Ticktin whose own theoretical work in this area sets the standard to which all other works are measured.

In my view Vladislav Bugera is a first rate scholar; he demonstrates an extensive knowledge of philosophy, history and politics and has a thorough grounding in theory which allows him a unique perspective. I have participated in international conferences with him and find him to be a scholar of rare talent, scope and commitment. He is exactly the kind of scholar-teacher that we treasure at Saint Mary’s.

Vladislav Bugera’s dissertation has all the necessary qualities of scholarship, erudition and exposition and is certainly deserving of the award of Doctorate.
